Rockford Police Chief Carla Redd made a plea to the public Tuesday for information that could help police solve a fatal shooting of a 17-year-old.

According to a news release, the shooting took place Monday evening in the 1100 block of Chestnut Street in Rockford.

Officers responded to a Shot Spotter alert, the release states. There was no response from a nearby residence. Police were called back later to the same residence for a gun shot victim.

A 17-year-old boy had a gunshot wound to torso. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to police, there was little cooperation from area residents, friends and family members.

“Today, we mourn the tragic loss, again, of a young life in our community. Our hearts go out to his loved ones, and we share in their pain during this unimaginable time,” Redd said in the news release. “Our detectives are already working tirelessly, however, we face a significant challenge: a lack of cooperation from those who may hold key information.”

We understand that fear, mistrust, or other barriers can make it difficult for individuals to come forward, but we cannot allow these obstacles to shield the perpetrator(s).”

Redd sent her support to the friends and family of the victim and encouraged anyone with information to contact the police.

“Even the smallest piece of information could be the key to solving this case,” Redd said. “Your courage to come forward could prevent another tragedy.”

The Rockford Police Department provided the following ways to contact them:

  • By telephone: 815-966-2900.

  • On Facebook at Rockford Illinois Police Department

  • Anonymously by sending a text to 847411 containing “RPDTIP” and the tip, through the Rockford PD App or by calling Rockford Area Crime Stoppers at 815-963-7867.
