The 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) concluded safely without any security incidents thanks to the vigilance and professionalism of the U.S. Department of State’s Diplomatic Security Service (DSS) and its federal, state, and local law enforcement partners. The event exemplified the DSS goal to keep America safe and secure while welcoming its representatives and the world’s diplomats.

UNGA is the largest annual diplomatic gathering in the world, and DSS is there to ensure that America’s strength and leadership set the conditions for secure, high-level diplomacy.

DSS worked with more than a dozen U.S. federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, including the New York Police Department, the U.S. Marshals Service, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the U.S. Secret Service, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and U.S. military explosives ordnance canine teams, to secure the New York City area.

This year, more than 800 DSS personnel supported security operations, including more than 600 DSS special agents who provided protective security for more than 40 visiting foreign dignitaries, the U.S. Secretary of State, and the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations during UNGA.

Much of the security operations at the U.N. General Assembly were orchestrated behind the scenes by our 200 Uniformed Protection Division Officers, Mobile Security Deployments teams, security engineering officers, security technical specialists, U.S. Navy Seabees, vehicle maintenance personnel, communication and tracking specialists, intelligence analysts, and administrative staff who ensure security and logistics support.

It is truly a team effort that exemplifies America’s security in action – clear, coordinated, and unshakable.
