Cooper on Rwanda bill: Extortionate scheme that has failed


The shadow home secretary said the government could have passed the legislation to fly migrants to Rwanda much sooner, and should use the money to “boost border security”.

Yvette Cooper claimed Rishi Sunak “always looks for someone else to blame”, and called the scheme “extortionate”.

Labour has said it was not blocking the legislation to fly asylum seekers to Rwanda.

The first flights deporting migrants will take off in 10 to 12 weeks Rishi Sunak has announced, but that will miss his original spring target.
